Cynthia Allen "I absolutely love stories like this one! A thought becomes an idea, this idea becomes a dream; the dream, when nurtured, becomes a mission. Tenacity can produce a physical reality, a dream that’s tangible for the world to behold and to enjoy!" Visit our Vinylize blog.
Carytown Optical of Richmond Virginia is now the dealer of Vinylize Eyewear. Vinylize was founded on the principles of making quality glasses from recycled materials and the use of old records has given the collection a distinctive look. The frames are big, thick and rugged and the grooves are an integral part of the design. The project serves to remind people to reuse, recycle and conserve.
Vinylize is a very cool collection of handmade eyewear, born in Seattle, now handmade in Budapest Hungary from recycled vinyl records. Vinylize is one of those "dream" stories that we in the United States are familiar with: failures are simply lessons that teach us to do it better next time. Vinlylize is an inspiring story of creativity and fortitude.
Ten years ago in Seattle, Washington, Zack and Zoltan Tipton began what is now called Vinylize eyewear of Tipton Eyeworks. Zack wanted his own designer pair of eyeglasses but couldn't afford it, so he tinkered in his father's garage and created his first frames by twisting thin metal. Years later, Zack was looking for another material to work with and in that same garage. He saw his father's old collection of vinyl records and a light bulb went off in his head: "Why not recycle this abundant material into eyewear?" Three years later, Zack and Zoltan began producing their line: Vinylize eyewear.
The American brothers worked tirelessly to blend the vinyl of the records with a layer of cellulose acetate to create stability and to provide the interior color and material of each piece. What was born of their artistic tenacity was, and is, a creation in eyewear like no other I have seen in over 25 years in the business. It is now globally awesome and universally loved.
Early in their search for a workshop to create their prototypes, the brothers moved to Budapest Hungary. To insulate the vinyl from the effects of heat, the Tiptons fused it to the biodegradable cellulose acetate using a proprietary technology to transform one of the world’s longest lasting plastics into fascinating eyewear. Their first series of frames were made from Communist vinyl, salvaged from a Budapest flea market. These long-lasting pressings could still be played after a half-century.
Today, Vinylize creates luxurious glasses of exceptional quality by a recycling method so precise that each and every groove is present on the finished piece. Every single eyeglass frame is crafted to the highest of quality and durability standards so that those who own and wear this art form will be able to do so for years and years to come. Vinylize are now sought after pieces of art, worn by many who recognize their unique materials and designs. They make great gifts for music lovers!
