Established in 1967, the Mitsuhiro Matsuda’s Nicole Company developed into one of the most influential fashion houses in the world. Founder Mitsuhiro Matsuda is recognized as being one of the first designers to merge architecture with fashion. It was his ready-to-wear creations that captured the attention of the world in the 1980s. Matsuda Eyewear was introduced in the US in 1985 with remarkable success. The campaigns of Mitsuhiro Matsuda were celebrated collaborations with renowned artists, such as Nan Goldin, Jan Saudek, Juergen Teller, and Bruce Weber, cementing Matsuda’s stature as an innovator and creator of art-as-fashion. This tradition continues to be the linchpin of everything they do today. A perfect pinnacle of high-end luxury eyewear.
Each Matsuda frame design is hand crafted in the renowned eyewear workshops of Sabae, Japan. It requires up to two years and as many as 250 steps to bring to life. Every frame reflects a unique journey of experimentation and creative exploration from concept to construction. Matsuda only uses the finest titanium, stainless steel, sterling silver, and 18k solid gold in the world. Their master Japanese craftsmen transform these raw materials into intricately detailed works of art, employing techniques few others would attempt: prioritizing quality over mass production. Matsuda’s Japanese acetate frames are sculpted only from an organic plastic derived from cotton and cured for over three months prior to construction. This lengthy process produces uniquely rich colors with unrivaled strength and durability. Each piece is then hand-finished by master polishers, producing a remarkably soft feel, sculpted for a lifetime of hard use.
Matsuda’s CR-39 plastic lenses are lighter and more impact-resistant than glass and filter out 100% of harmful UVA and UVB light. Each lens is treated with seven layers of anti-reflective coating. This reduces eye strain by eliminating unwanted reflections. For even greater clarity, our polarized lenses filter out distracting glare and enhance contrast.
Matsuda remains a true architect of eyewear with every hinge, temple, and component thoughtfully considered and uniquely designed for each collection. From their iconic side shields to our innovative pince-nez bridges, their designs are an unmistakable homage to their heritage today, redefined for tomorrow.
